Scented Candles can be found almost anywhere today with a vast variety of scents, colours, sizes, styles and price. They can be used for decoration or for adding ambience and atmosphere to a room or a special occasion. But which one do you choose? Which brand? Which are the best scented candles for you?Where ever you look and who ever you ask you will be bombarded with the virtues of a particular scent or brand. There are many loyal supporters of Yankee candle but there are also those who are not as vocal about the virtues of their products. Choice will depend on one's experience of a scent or brand, recommendations from a friend or colleague maybe price and reason for the purchase - will it be a present or required for a function, scented candles may not be appropriate for a situation where food may be involved. Scented candles will be available in paraffin wax, soy , palm or beeswax to name a few and again each supplier and supporter will extol the benefits or disadvantages of each. For Every Body scented candles have firmly decided that soy is the best material for their candles while the Ashleigh & Burwood range are made from palm wax. For Everybody candles have continued to extend its soy based candle range giving the customer a true alternative brand with all the advantages of being green.

Soy candles are made from soy wax which is a by product of the soy bean. It is a relatively new wax for producing both scented and unscented candles. The soy wax was invented as late as 1992 by Michael Richards while looking for a cheaper alternative to beeswax. The growing demand for green and sustainable products has helped promote the demand for soy candles. Like other types of scented candles fragrances are added to the soy wax to provide attractive scents when the candle is burned. A great deal has been said about the advantages of soy wax candles and in 1999 a great deal of scientific research was carried out to investigate the rights or wrongs of these claims. Two papers were published. “Hydrogenated vegetable oils as candle wax” by Rezaei, K., T. Wang, and L. A. Johnson and “Combustion characteristics of candles made from hydrogenated soybean oil.” Again by Rezaei, K., T. Wang, and L. A. Johnson.

Some of the advantages of soy scented candles are: Tend to be cheaper than paraffin wax candles, Soy wax is from a natural source and hence renewable. Some manufactures claim that soy candles have a longer burning time than similar sized paraffin wax candles.  Wax spills from soy candles are easier to clean requiring only soapy water. It is claimed that soy candles produce up to 90% less soot than paraffin wax candles. Scented soy candles also produce more scent due to the wax having a lower melting point. This results in a larger size liquid wax pool around the candle wick. It is from this liquid wax pool that the essential oils evaporate into the atmosphere.

Representing fantastic value for money the company is promoting its Organic Living range featuring its 18oz Pillar candle with an average burn time of 120 hours. These candles include firm favourites and best sellers such as Baby Powder, Clean Linen, Ocean Mist, Driftwood Sand and Coconut & Lime. These scented candles provide a green scented gift with, “fragrance that out lasts the occasion” to refresh every home at a very reasonable price.

Candles initially were a necessity of life, they extended the day and allowed light to shine after the sun had gone down. It allowed work to be extended into the night and provided the light for social actions to be undertaken. It is very hard to imagine life without any form of artificial light. However, today candles play a very different role, except in exceptional circumstances of power cuts! Today candles are used to add a touch of warmth or to create a relaxing atmosphere. Some candles are purchased just for their shape, size or colour to help create a focal point or as an aid to accentuating the colours in a room. When ever we watch a home design program there is always a candle or candles added. Their inclusion, in some way, add that finishing touch that helps to make the room more homily, more lived in, softer, warmer!

It was the 19th Century that new developments made a great impact on candle making. Michel Eugene Chevreul discovered how to obtain steric acid from animal fat. Stearin was invaluable to candle makers. At the same time advances in wick technology, allowing the burn time of candles to be increased making them more economical. As with all industries it wasn’t long before the manufacturing of candles took a major leap forward. Where as every town had its own chandler once Joseph Morgan invented a machine to help mass produce candles with fewer workers the industrialisation of candle making had began.

Price Patent Candles were generally a late comer to the making of candles and only started manufacturing candles in 1830. While being a late comer it did not have an adverse effect on their presence in the candle market place. With their new developments and the advances in candle manufacturing it was not long before the production of cheap night lights and composite candles transform people’s living standards. This meant that people who previously could not afford such luxuries as candles now had the opportunity to bring light into their homes at an affordable price. Candles were no longer the luxury of the well off. Within 20 years Prices Candles had become a household name and by the end of the century not only were they a National household name but probably one of the largest candle manufacturers in the world if not the largest with a reputation that still holds true today for quality products with excellent service.

While the industrial revolution was taking place Price Candles tried to ensure that their advancements were not made at the expense of their work force. A great emphasis was placed on improving the lives and lots of their workers. The company provided schools for the education of the children employed by them, quality housing in factory villages where possible, paid holidays, pension schemes and even profit sharing. Even today you can tell the ethos set at the birth of this firm still exists. Their customer service is I believe second to none, I have always found them to be extremely helpful, courteous, considerate and professional and while the company is still an active member in a highly competitive market it has still not loss sight of its original values.

While candles initially were a necessity of life and this reliance let to the candle’s development one can not say the same of the candle today, particularly in the modern world. Here candles are chosen more for their looks, design and scent rather than their functionality.  Since the late nineteen hundreds the development and popularity of the scented candle has grown, with it being reported that nearly seven out of ten households now use scented candles in their living accommodation. So the candle has moved from being the main source of light in the home to becoming a mood enhancer and luxury item that can complement or add to a room’s décor. However, it seems that from the rise of the scented candle the candle is still as popular today as it has been in the past albeit for different reasons.
Today scented candles are not only the most popular type of candle purchased but come in a huge variety of scents and a wide array of sizes, styles and mediums. Scented candles are not only found in the more traditional pillar candle style but can now be purchased in a wide variety of scented jar candles, tins, votive candles, scented tea lights, tapers and even floating candles. They come in a variety of waxes such as paraffin, beeswax, palm wax and soy to name a few. Even the number of wicks has been modified from the more traditional single wick style to two, three or even more wicks. All these changes have been designed to improve the delivery of the scent from the scented candle to the local environment. A new comer to the scented candle range is the scented tart. This item has no wick at all but provides a scent that any scented candle would be proud of. What ever the function or occasion a suitable scented candle may be found in a style that would add the finishing touches to any decorative design with a scent that would complement the occasion.
